DP Sports Player of the Week: Rory Starkey

content_img

At halftime, Penn football was down 13-10 to Harvard and needed somebody to step up in the second half. That somebody turned out to be sophomore wide receiver Rory Starkey.

Starkey caught two touchdowns for the Red and Blue — the team’s only second-half scores — in Saturday’s tight , good for DP Player of the Week honors.

After not playing a single snap last season, the sophomore came out of nowhere to star as one of Penn’s leading receivers, serving as a target for senior quarterback Nick Robinson all season long.

Coming into this weekend’s game, Starkey had already made a name for himself as an offensive weapon for the Quakers. His four receiving touchdowns werhelsea legend John Terry believes they are in the best position to finish fourth in the Premier League. The Blues have seen their lead cut down after losing to Manchester United at home on Monday night. And they have the small matter of Tottenham comine already the most of any player on the team, and his pair against Harvard means he now has double the next-best receivers, sophomore Ryan Cragun and senior Kolton Huber at three each.

Just over a minute into Stefano Pioli admits he wants more from Krzysztof Piatek and Lucas Paqueta. Both youngsters joined Milan a year ago, but have struggled to live up to their initial hype.“I have no doubts about Paqueta, he’s a mezz’ala,” said Pioli.“He works hard the third quarter, Robinson and Starkey combined for a 70-yard touchdown to put the Quakers up 17-13. The pass was both Robinson and Starkey’s longest scoring play of the season and took away any positive momentum Harvard had from the break.

The Crimson would answer back later in the third to retake the lead, but Starkey again would electrify the visiting crowd with seven minutes to play in the final quarter.

On fourth and 1 inside Harvard’s red zone, Robinson found Starkey once again with a 16-yard pass that the sophomore grabbed with one hand before securing the score in the end zone. Even more than putting Penninuing with Willian.Lampard has made it clear he wants the midfielder to stay.He told chelseafc.com: “I know the club are talking to him. Willian and Callum (Hudson-Odoi) are both players I want in my squad. “We’ve made some good moves this pre-seaso back on top, Starkey’s second touchdown of the day put the Quakers’ defense in the spotlight after stopping the Crimson twice late to seal the game.

Starkey has shown time after time that he is capable of not only playing with the Ivy League’s best, but thriving in high-pressure scenarios. He still has one more game to add to his 2019 statistics, but 2020 and 2021 might hold even more success.

Ivy competition, national champion on the slate in Penn field hockey's weekend trip to New York

content_img

Upstate New York has served as a notable battleground in American history. That legacy will continue this weekend as Penn field hockey arms itself for two of the hardest encounters it will face this season.

This Saturday, the Red and Blue (4-1) travel to Ithaca, N.Y., where they will open up Ivy League competition against Cornell. A day later, the team will travel an hour north to No. 1 Syracuse as they ready to face the defending NCAA champions.

Being caught between a rock and a hard place might be an apt description for the Quakers’ upcoming matchups, but the team stresses it’s taking the challenges one game at a time.

Against the Big Red (4-2) on Saturday, it’s hard to believe that anyone will have forgotten the epic contest when the two teams met in Philadelphia last fall.

Three goals in the last six minutes of regulation sent the game to overtime tied at 2-2. The deadlock held for a mere 17 seconds, when then-sophomore Alexa Hoover tucked away a penalty stroke after nearly dribbling the entire Cornell defense single-handedly.

“Ivy play is just a fight, a fight till the end,” senior defender Claire Kneizys said.

This year, Penn tar Tanguy Ndombele. The French central midfielder is a wanted man this summer. He has been linked to a host of top clubs, including Manchester United and City. However, theDaily Star indicates that it will be a straight fight between Spurs and Juve forhas already become well-accustomed to gritty, extended matches, having grabbed overtime winners over Saint Joseph’s and Fairfield in its last two games.

“It’s good for the team to know that that resilience is still there but also to be prepared mentally for that battlegrounladolid owner insists he never wished to leave Barca at the time.”I had signed a contract to renew at the end of the season and I went on a trip with Brazil and after five days they called me to tell me that I could not continue with the renewal,” Rod atmosphere,” coach Colleen Fink said.

It’s easy to see why these battle metaphors keep showing up. For the Quakers, this weekend seems to evoke a sense of warrior spirit.

All eight teams in Ivy play hope to draw first blood in this seven game campaign, and the Penn-Cornell contest this Saturday brings together the two second-place finishers from last year’s Ancient Eight standings, meaning there will be a lot on the line when the two face off in Ithaca.

“I’m ready to beat them in regulation this year,” Kneizys said.

When Penn plays the Orange (7-0) on Sunday, it will be a test of a whole different magnitude. While the Red and Blue actually topped Syracuse in an offseason tournament last spring, the regular season is another story, and Fink says that Syracuse has added a formidable physicality to its play this year.

“They’re very aggressive, they aren’t super concerned with fouling [and] they don’t play at all tentative,” Fink said.

“We can’t be looking for calls that we might not get up in New York.”

“Something that we’ve really been focusing on this week and really the whole season is intensity,” Kneizys added. “Just doing everything at 100 percent, playing faster, playing stronger and also [having] a lot more motion on the field, switching and playing less positionally.”

The Quakers have faced Syracuse in the regular season three times before, most recently in 2006. None of those matchups resulted in a Red and Blue win, and it would take an incredible effort for Penn to emerge from this upcoming matchup on the winning side.

But it is a fantastic opportunity for Penn to see how it matches up against the top teams in the country, a club that the Quakers are well on their way to joining soon.

According to Kneizys, the team has two defined gocTominay insists Wolves are not Manchester United’s bogey team. The Red Devils were beaten twice by Nuno Espirito Santo’s side last season. They will meet again at Molineux on Monday night, and McTominay says that history won’t impact the result.McTomials this season: to stop Princeton’s 16 year Ivy League champion dynasty and to be one of the nation’s best and most recognized programs.

“To be a top 20 team you have to beat other top 20 teams,” she said.

The Quakers will have the opportunity to advance both goals this weekend, but they’ll have to fight for it.

Penn women's lacrosse ousted from Tourney by No. 1 Maryland

Sunday’s rematch between Penn women’s lacrosse and No. 1 Maryland was different from the squads’ first meeting of the season in many ways. The end result, however, was not one of them.

In a game characterized by a series of runs from the Terrapins as well as staunch defense from the nation’s top-ranked team, Maryland managed to take down the Quakers for the second time in less than two months, capturing a 13-5 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Just like its first matchup against the Terrapins on March 19, Penn found itself on the wrong end of the opening draw. Yet unlike the preid. The summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt has battled for minutes under coach Zinedine Zidane. But he insists: “He has told me that he trusts me, that he is happy that I am here, and that I’ve done a lot to get to the Real. “I am happy, I hope tovious contest, the Red and Blue’s defense held strong in the early going, forcing several missed shots and two turnovers in the game’s first four minutes.

After withstanding Maryland’s early onslaught, the Quakers managed to strike first, taking a 1-0 lead when senior midfield Lindsey Smith found the back of the net 4:24 into the first half.

Smith’s early unassisted goal had Penn in a much better position than in the team’s first matchup with the Terrapins. Back in March, Maryland scored a mere 14 seconds into the game and Penn found itself in a 4-0 hole before it could get on the board.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Smith’s strike was one of theester United are eyeing Norwich City fullback Max Aarons. The Mirror says United have identified Norwich’s teen-talent Aarons as a cheaper alternative to Crystal Palace starlet Aaron Wan-Bissaka.United are considering the other names on their shortlis few highlights on Sunday for the eight-time defending Ivy League champions. It came after Gomez was left with a scratch down his face and neck when Sterling accosted himgoals 10 seconds apart by junior attack Kelly McPartland and senior midfield Beth Glaros.

Trailing 4-1 with 11:38 remaining, the Quakers’ leading goal-scorer in 2014, senior midfield Tory Bensen, cut into the Terps lead with her 41st goal of the season. Sophomore midfield Nina Corcoran assisted on Bensen’s goal, her fifth assist in two games in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

54 seconds after Penn cut the score to 4-2, Corcoran found the back of the net with an unassisted goal of her own, bringing the Quakers within one.

It was the closest the Red and Blue would get the rest of the day.

Consecutive goals from junior attack Brooke Griffin over the next four minutes expanded Maryland’s lead to 6-3.

Bensen’s second goal of the afternoon stopped the bleeding momentarily with 3:39 remaining in the first period as the Quakers got within two goals yet again. But Glaros scored on a free position shot 55 second later, and Cummings added an unassisted goal with 33 second left before halftime to put Maryland up, 8-4, at the break.

The Terps seized control of Sunday’s game due in large part to their stifling defense. After Bensen’s goal cut Maryland’s lead to 6-4, the nation’s top-ranked squad closed out the contest by scoring seven of the game’s final eight goals.

And unlike the first half, the Red and Blue were unable to contain the Terps’ potent attack in the second period. Glaros completed the hat trick with an unassisted score just 21 seconds after halftime and Maryland was well on its way to victory.

Bensen completed the hat trick with her 43rd goal of the season with 19:50 remaining. But the Quakers went scoreless thereafter as the Terps added four goals to its total to seal the win.

Penn now enters its offseason off of a campaign in which it had the fifth-most wins in program history. Though the Quakers fell in their second game of this year’s Tournament, it marked the first time since 2010 that the Red and Blue won a game in the postseason.

EIWA race to heat up on campus for Penn wrestling

The big day has finally arrived for Penn wrestling.

This weekend, the Quakers will compete in the 2014 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships at home in the Palestra. This year’s tournament will b says Charlie Taylor could become an England international. The left-back has struggled for game-time this season as Erik Pieters has made the left-back spot his own.But Dyche sees enough potential in the 26-year-old for him to become a future member e the biggest yet, with 18 teams in the mix and 47 spots at the NCAA Championships up for grabs.

Despite an uneven season so far, Penn has been peaking recently, winning three straight duals over Columbia, Princeton and Drexel. The Quakers will look to take advantage of being under the radar to make a bigme an issue.John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are now fit again, but Rodri has since picked up an injury and Fernandinho will be suspended for the Carabao Cup clash with Southampton on Tuesday.Guardiola said: “For the short term we can handle it. For showing in front of their home crowd.

“I think the guys are in a really good physical and mental state right now, we’ve had some really good workouts and they’re pretty excited,” coach Rob Eiter said. “I expect them to go out and wrestle their butts off. If they give everything they’ve got I think we’ll do pretty well.”

The favorites for the Red and Blue will be sophomores Casey Kent (165 pounds) and Lorenzo Thomas (184) , who are ranked No. 19 and No. 10 at their respective weightclasses. In order to conquer the EIWA crown, both of them might have to avenge losses from earlier this year to the probable No. 1 seeds.

Cornell’s Dylan Palacio, ranked 14th in the nation, defeated Kent twice this season, 4-1 and 4-2. Meanwhile, the last person to defeat Thomas was No. 3 Gabe Dean – also of Cornell – by the score of 7-5.

“Fortunately for both Lorenzo and Casey, they’ve already wrestled the guys that are seeded number one,” Eiter said. “If they go in there and just wrestle as well as we know they can – and they can – there’s nobody that’s heads and above somebody else right now in those two weightclasses.”

“I just need to wrestle smart against [Dean]. The last time it was close score-wise, but he kind of controlled the match for the most part,” Thomas added. “I need to wrestle my match and not let him do what he wants to do.”

Beyond the obvious duo, Eiter thinks most grapplers on the Red and Blue’s talented roster have a reasonable shot at pulling off what he called “an upset just on paper.” Amongst them are junior Jeff Canfora (141) and the freshman pair Frank Mattiace (197) and Caleb Richardson (125).

“I think Jeff and Frank are probably the two worst draws you can have … they definitely have the potential to beat anybody,” Eiter said. “Especially Frank’s weightclass is pretty wide open, everybody’s kind of beaten everybody, so that’s going to be very interesting.

“Caleb’s going to get overlooked and he has a ton of talent. His skill set is super high so he easily could be in the finals for us.”

For Kent, the key to success is simple.

“I [have] jmmer are wide open.Speaking with AD, Van de Beek denied claims of an agreement with Real Madrid and left the door open to joining Manchester United. On Real, he stated: “That is said and written, people take over, and then it starts to lead its own ust got to wrestle like I’ve been wrestling the whole season, not worry about what happens and just go out there.”

Penn men's soccer kicks off home stretch vs. Big Green

content_img

Being in a city may limit our exposure to nature, but there will be no shortage of green at Rhodes Field on Saturday night.

With two shutouts in Ivy play so far, the Penn men’s soccer team is looking for another clean sheet against the Big Green in its third Ivy contest.

“We are really focusing on keeping a lot of possession this game, really working the ball around, really stretching their defense out and picking them apart that way,” senior Alex Reddy said. “Making it a little bit less of a foot race, less of an athletic battle and much more of a soccer game.”

While the Quakers (4-6-1, 1-0-1 Ivy) are coming off of a win and a tie in league play, Dartmouth (4-2-4, 0-2) is trying to come back from two close losses after a great out-of-conference display.

“They’ve had a lot of success over the years,” coach Rudy Fuller said. “They have lost two very close, difficult games in the league but they have some quality results in the season so far. They were undefeated coming into the league matches.”

The last time the Red and Blue beat Dartmouth was three years ago when they went 5-2 in league play and beat Cornell and Columbia prior to playing in Hanover. Yet the past two years, the Big Green have gotten out in front early and the Quakers couldn’t recover.

But this year is very different from last year’s 1-6 run through Ivy play — just look at the Quakers’ Ivy record thus far.

“We’ve got to get on our front foot and play aggressively and really try to pin them in their end and put them under some pressure and make them chase,” Fuller said. “But in order to do that we have to be very sharp on the ball.”

“Every year brings a new set of challenges, and I don’t expect this year’s game to be like last year’s game or two years ago,” Reddy added. “We have to expect Real Madrid. The Belgian moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid last summer, but he has yet to impress with his performances, while he has also struggled with injuries since his arrival.”If Hazard is not playing well, something happens at Real Madrid,” ht them to start fast, and we have to be ready to go off the bat. But I think coming into this game with two clean sheets, we are feeling very good about ourselves defensively and how well we will be able to compete.”

Just as the Quakers are a different team than they were last season, the Big Green have also made some changes. Former assistant coach Chad Riley took over for Jeff Cook and is in his inaugural season as head coach. However, the team doesn’t seem to have changed too radically.

“The philosophy seems to be much of the same in terms of their setup and how they play and how they look to attack and how they look to defend,” Fuller said.

With all Ivy games last weekend going into overtime, the league is more competitive than it has been in years past. But the run the Quakers have had so far gives them confidence for a promising future.

McHugh adds to his legacy

There are very few ways to better finish a collegiate career than being named an All-American.

And even fewer than earning the honor twice.

Senior Brendan McHugh capped his Quakers career in Seattle this weekend with two 14th place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at the NCAA swimming championships, earning honorable mention All-American nods. He also placed 39th in the 200 individual medley with a personal best time of 1:47.57.

McHugh’s times in the breaststroke events, 53.03 and 1:55.82, were personal bests and school records.

“I didn’t go quite as fast as I wanted,” McHugh said, “but I’m still really happy.”

While McHugh’s finish was the best NCAA performance in program history, he could not outswim Princeton’s Jonathan Christensen, who currently holds the Ivy League breaststroke records. Christenson won the consolation final of the 100 breast and finished seventh in the 200.

McHugh said not beating Christensen “bothered me, but it wasn’t the end of the world. “I can only control what I do.”

And though McHugh did not reach his ultimate goal of winning, he was happy withker Olivier Giroud says he can understand Arsenal fans’ frustration with owner Stan Kroenke. On Monday, a group of 16 prominent supporters’ groups and bloggers signed a letter calling on Gunners owner Stan Kroenke to “reinvigorate” the club.Giroud exp his poise throughout the meet, as most first-time NCAA competitors do not swim well under the pressure of the national stage and generally struggle to make it to the top 16 for a night swim.

“To go there and duplicate your times and make it [to finals] is a lot harder than you might think it would be,” assistant coach Dan Schupsky said.

McHugh, however, swam in the finals of two events and said head coaches from Texas and Georgia both approached him to say how rare the accomplishment was.

“I was happy with myself that I didn’t choke,” he said.

Schupsky said McHugh may have been “a little bit tense” before the swim. “That’s a little tiny tiny tiny disappointment in a fantastic list of accomplishments,” Schupsky said.

While the senior finished in the same place in both breaststroke events, he said his best night was Saturday, the final session of the meet.

“Cracking from 1:56 to 1:55 [in the 200 breast], even though it’s only two or three tenths, it still feels a lot faster, McHugh said. “I was definitely happiest about [that event].”

McHugh leaves Penn having rewritten the record books — he has six individual and four relay school records — and is excited to move on to training for Olympic Trials in June.

“This weekend gave me confidence moving forward,” he said. “A lot of confidence.”

Ranked teams don’t normally schedule Penn women’s basketball. But this year’s team is different and needs to be challenged.

If the Quakers are to be successful this year, tonight’s matchup against No. 3 Notre Dame will be their most important game of the season.

The Red and Blue haven’t faced a player who can create her own shot as well as ND senior Natalie Novosel. They have never seen as quick, strong and agile a player as preseason All-American Skylar Diggins. They have never faced a rebounder as strong as Devereaux Peters.

But when Penn takes on the Fighting Irish at the Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Ind., the Quakers can prove to the rest of the Ivy League and Big 5 that they are a team to be reckoned with.

“I hope it’s a game where we can look the opponent squarely in the eye and not back down,” coach Mike McLaughlin said. “It presents a lot of challenges but we can’t be afraid. I’m anxious. It’s great trip for our program.”

Coming off a win against No. 7 Duke, the Fighting Irish are easily the most talented team that Penn has faced under coach Mike McLaughlin.

A 2011 Final Four team, Notre Dame has only lost once this year — to No. 1 Baylor. In fact, the Irish have beaten all four unranked opponents they have faced by an average of 40.5 points.

But for the Quakers, this game represents an important measuring stick and could not have come at a more perfect is Smalling.Smalling is currently on-loan at Roma, though no permanent option was included.Roma have now opened talks with United about a fee for the defender.A first offer of €10m has been tabled – only half of the Red Devils’ asking price at a retime in the season. At 4-1, the Red and Blue are off to their best start in program history, but their play has been anything but solid.

Penn has struggled at points during games, most notably in the second half against Rider and La Salle, but has shown a growing maturity by expertly closing out games. Against Notre Dame, however, the Quakers won’t be able to afford mistakes or mental lapses.

“[They are] a special team that was a play away from a national championship,” McLaughlin said.

With four wins already, Penn is surging with confidence. McLaughlin has been able to balance the youth of three freshmen earning major minutes and experience of forwards Jess Knapp and Jourdan Banks.

“With Kareem involved, I hope they won’t just make the celebrity hire,” Jackson said. “I don’t think they will.”

Jackson has been with the Penn program since the beginning of the Fran Dunphy coaching era and he feels this wealth of experience would aid him at another Ivy school.

“I’m familiar with the Ivy League — the Ivy League is a different type of environment,” Jackson said. “The rules, the financial aid part…That’s unique to the Ivy League.”

The most veteran Penn assistant by nine years, Jackson has served an all-purpose role in recent years, with the overall goal “to keep Penn at the forefront of the Ivy League.”

Jackson, a guard during his playing days at Elizabethtown College, has been at the forefront of recruiting for the Quakers.

A staple on the bench often sporting a polka-dot bow-tie, Jackson has had unsuccessful head coaching interviews for positions at the University of Delaware and Cornell University in the past.

The current Penn assistant figures that this could be a different scenario, despite pressure from Columbia alumni to hire Abdul-Jabbar.

“With most jobs [where I have interviewed], I had an idea who would be hired,” Jackson said. “Usually there is some connection in the athletic department and they have a certain card in mind.”

Men's Hoops falls to Delaware in final seconds

NEWARK, Del. — With 6:48 to go in the game last night at Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center, Penn senior guard David Klatsky fouled Delaware’s Rulon Washington behind the three-point arc on the left baseline.

Washington went to the line and swished all three free throws, tying the game at 50. After eating away at a 32-27 Penn (1-2) halftime lead, it was the first tie since the first minute of the game.

With 4,797 now-rowdy fans behind them, the Fightin’ Blue Hens (2-1) grabbed the momentum and executed in the key momentsel has spoken of his love-hate relationship with Jamie Vardy while in charge of Leicester City.Vardy has scored as many goals under Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers as he did under Puel but in less than half the games.”I did not have a problem with Jamie,” during the final stretch of the game, eventually closing out the Quakers 60-59.

“The game could’ve gone either way,” Delaware coach David Henderson said. “But we made a couple of big plays when we needed them in the last couple of minutes, and I think that was the difference in the ball game.”

After three Delaware offensive rebounds on the same possession — the third coming from senior guard Ryan Iversen — senior forward Dave Hindenlang received Iversen’s pass and sank a jumper in the lane with 45 seconds to play. Though he missed the subsequent “and-one” free throw after a Tim Begley foul, the field goal pushed the Blue Hens ahead for good.

“The close ones really hurt, especially when they come down the stretch,” Penn point guard Andrew Toole said. “Especially after Hindenlang comes down the lves wing-back Oskar Buur has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract. The 21-year-old Dane has agreed a deal until the summer of 2023 on the back of being integrated into the first team. Last week, boss Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed Buur is now alane and gets fouled after everybody’s battling, doing the best they can on defense.

“It seemed like we were playing defense for the last minute and a half out there.”

Delaware is 2-17 in the past three years when failing to score 60 points.

With seven seconds left, Iversen sank two free-throws to make it a two possession game at 60-56.

Penn senior forward Ugonna Onyekwe sank a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left, but the effort would not be enough for the Quakers, who have now lost their second-straight game.

Even before the two teams tipped off, Penn was at a disadvantage, as starting point guard Andrew Toole was forced out of the starting lineup because of a strained abdominal muscle.

He came off the bench with 14:17 left in the first half, playing for 12 minutes in the first.

Toole ended up playing 25 minutes in the game, scoring eight points on 3-for-8 shooting.

Penn coach Fran Dunphy had emphasized the importance of going down low against the Blue Hens’ big men early, especially after forward Koko Archibong only shot three field-goals in their previous game against Drexel.

But just 3:42 into the game, Ugonna Onyekwe picked up his second foul after pursuing a rebound and would not return for the rest of the half.

He collected his first foul in a scramble for the ball, even after Delaware already had control.

“The first one was foolish,” Dunphy said. “There was no reason to run over there, the play was over.”

With Penn’s NBA prospect out of the game, Delaware center Maurice Sessoms took over the paint on both ends of the floor.

The senior went 5-for-6 from the field in the first half and 5-for-6 from the line.

The situation almost became disastrous when Koko Archibong hobbled to the bench with 9:47 left in the first half because of an ailing right knee.

“Koko’s fine, there is no injury,” Dunphy said. “He’s got a boatload of tape on his leg but he’s able to play.”

In Onyekwe’s absence, Penn senior Adam Chubb played 15 minutes in the first half but had little success defending Sessoms.

Yet while Sessoms dominated the inside at the outset, Onyekwe’s second half return drastically limited Delaware’s main threat.

Sessoms scored only four points in the second half — two of them coming on a 15-foot jumper, after his defender was screened on an out-of-bounds play.

Onyekwe also held his ground on the defensive end, forcing Sessoms to adapt his play and turn the ball over several times.

But after Onyekwe forced Sessoms to travel with 14:37 left to go in the game, the Penn senior missed a pair of free throws at the other end of the floor.

Onyekwe, a 65.2 percent free throw shooter for the season, went 2-for-5 from the line last night. Penn finished the night 6-for-13 from the free throw line.

Despite Penn’s insufficiencies from the line and Delaware’s four 3-pointers in the second half at opportune times — including two by Iversen — Penn had a chance to win the game, down two, with 11.3 seconds left.

After senior guard Jeff Schiffner stole an outlet pass, he found Toole across the court for a clean look at a 3-pointer. The shot hit the back of the rim, and Onyekwe missed the tip-in.

After Iversen’s free throws, the game was all but over.
