You’ll notice the absence of any “funereal black,” which is what typically adorns such patches. As Goold writes, that’s no accident:
There is no black in any of the three patches.
“Not that it wouldn’t have been appropriate,” Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said this week at the team’s spring training complex, “but we felt it should be colors that were more a celebration of a life.”
Goold goes on to note that Cardinal players will wear the patch on their left sleeves because one exec noted that would place it “closest to the heart.”
